One of the finest in foliage and flower - the leaves being leathery, scallop-shaped, shiny and deeply-lobed, and also whitish beneath. The catkins are magnificently displayed, for they hang in long brownish yellow tassels in January provided that the weather is mild. The trees, which like all alders will grow anywhere and stand any amount of exposure, also produce a multitude of cones, persistent all winter and speckling their silhouettes with black dots. The bark is grey and smooth; becoming a little cracked later. |
